Last season proved that money doesn't buy success and it was a lesson which all the big clubs have ignored! In 1996, the world record transfer was set at £13,200,000 when Barcelona bought Ronaldo (the Brazilian one) from PSV Eindhoven. Just 20 years later and the record has increased by almost £100m. Crazy!
Leicester ruffled a few feathers and it was incredible to witness, but I can't see them repeating their success this time around - or even getting close to it. They simply don't have the depth of squad to compete in the Premier League as well as Champions League.
Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have new managers. Will they need time to bed in, or will they get off to a flyer? Could that give settled Tottenham, Arsenal or Liverpool a head start? Lots of unknowns which makes predicting what will happen almost a year from now incredibly difficult.
I'm going to discount North London. Tottenham had a great season last time around, but still finished below Arsenal. They just can't crack that hoodoo, even with the Gunners becoming really quite stale under Arsene Wenger. One more season and they'll replace him with Eddie Howe from Bournemouth.
Chelsea will definitely not finish as low as they did last season, but going from slightly above average to title contenders is asking for a lot. Jürgen Klopp is terrific, though he hasn't quite managed to coach Liverpool out of their habit of screwing things up.
That leaves me with a top two of City and United. I actually backed Manchester United at 6.40 just after Jose Mourinho became manager and traded out recently at 4.10 for a very nice profit. I'm not convinced that they will get through an entire season without Jose and Zlatan having an ego clash!
So my pick for this season? Manchester City. Pep Guardiola wins trophies with great teams and there is no doubt that City have the players to go all the way. Concentrate on keeping Sergio Agüero quiet and Kevin De Bruyne will steal the show instead. John Stones is only going to get better, especially now Joe Hart has gone!
As long as my team, Bournemouth, stay up I'll be happy!
